Thanks to a generous partnership with Genworth Financial, Center for Sport Leadership at VCU developed Lobs & Lessons in 2004 as a community outreach initiative to work with youth in the Richmond area.
Lobs & Lessons promotes education and life skills for elementary school-age children through the combination of mentoring, tutoring and teaching tennis. The program uses the sport to reach economically disadvantaged youth.
The majority of the children in the program, housed in the Mary and Frances Youth Center on VCU's Monroe Park Campus, come from single-parent homes in which 60 percent of the households earn an annual income of less than $15,000 and 84 percent of the children receive free lunch at school. VCU and Genworth Financial recognize these alarming statistics and want to do their part to help the Richmond community, especially its children.
Each year, our graduate students serve as excellent mentors to the youth of Lobs & Lessons. Center for Sport Leadership students provide more than 2,000 service hours throughout the school year by working with Lobs & Lessons and other community service groups.
