Gregory Greenhalgh, Ph.D.
Greg Greenhalgh joined the Center for Sport Leadership (CSL) at VCU in July of 2011 as the Director of Student Services and Outreach. Prior to joining the CSL Greenhalgh taught in the Sport Administration Department at the University of Louisville where he attained his Ph.D. He also has a M.A. in Sport Administration from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor’s of Sport Management from Brock University.
Greenhalgh’s primary research interest focuses on the marketing of sport organizations, specifically investigating what attracts fans and sponsors to niche, or non-mainstream, sports and how these sports can position themselves to be more sustainable in the future. His other research interests include consumer behavior, sport and the natural environment. Currently, he has articles published in the Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, Sport Marketing Quarterly, International Journal of Sport Communication, International Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, International Journal of Sport Management & Marketing, Marketing Management Journal. Greenhalgh has also presented at several national and international conferences including the North American Society for Sport Management, Sport Marketing Association, and European Association of Sport Management, and American Marketing Association.
From a teaching perspective, Greenhalgh has focused on Sport Marketing, Sales and Development, as well as acting as the faculty externship coordinator. Through these experiences he has worked with a number of organizations including VCU Athletics, the Richmond Sports Backers, Disney’s Wide World of Sports, the University of Richmond Athletics, the Colonial Athletic Association, the Atlantic 10 Athletic Conference, the Louisville Sports Commission, the Mid-South Conference of the NAIA, the University of Louisville Athletics Department.
Greenhalgh also spent several years in the sport industry. He held the position of Company Representative at FieldTurf, attending and representing the company at Super Bowl XL and the NCAA Convention. He also was the assistant manager of a small hockey and lacrosse focused pro shop for nearly 10 years and also interned with the Professional Hockey Player’s Association.
