Externships

All CSL students complete externships by working full time for important organizations in the sports industry. Along with graduate assistantships, these opportunities ensure that our graduates have ample real-world experience when they leave our program.

Externships last for three months during the summer following an academic year at the CSL. They count for six credit hours toward an M.S.L. Students may, however, complete a shorter externship for an additional three credit hours, then pair that with three credit hours earned by participating in the European Model of Sport summer trip.

Think of externships like full-time jobs that also provide credit hours toward your degree.

Students generally find externships in one of three ways:

  1. After completing a graduate assistantship during the academic year, a student may be asked or arrange to continue working in an extension of the same position. That position is treated as the student's externship.
  2. A student is hired on full time to a standard job in the sports industry. The first three months of that job will be earmarked by the CSL as an externship.
  3. A student applies for an externship with a sports organization in a process similar to a standard job search.

"I think the biggest thing that makes the program special is the experiential learning you get here.
That’s what the CSL is built on."
